The Building Process
Old Workshop Renovation
The old workshop on the property was renovated over a three year period. I worked with a local architect to design the new studio. The goal was to create an open acoustical space that had exceptional sound quality. The windows on the south side provide passive solar gain during the winter and good natural lighting.
The renovation process involved removing the roof from the old workshop and knocking down the wall on the south side in order to be able to accurately frame in the windows.
Our Vision
Finishing the interior required first laying down the Olympic grade rubber matting on the concrete slab. The total weight of this heavy rubber matting came to around 2,300 pounds. Next the control booth was framed with heavy beams and finished with pine paneling.
The studio was designed to be spacious and awe inspiring. Getting the best acoustics in the building was always the fundamental objective. Designing and building this facility from the ground up allowed us to pay attention to every detail.
Big Details
- Over a three year process designing and building the studio from the ground up
- Custom building the acoustic tiles on all of the walls
- Rewiring the entire building with a new 100 amp breaker box
- wiring convenient inputs and headphone jacks throughout the studio
- Wiring the studio with dedicated circuits to insure a clean electrical feed
- Power conditioning devices used to insure a clean electrical feed
- Installing a 9.5 kw solar electric system to produce 100% studio power
- Installing heavy Olympic grade rubber matting on the floor
- Utilizing NM Surf high speed internet

The Power of the Sun
Sky Valley Studios is a “one of a kind” recording studio that is 100% powered by solar electric. Recording with solar electric power is uplifting and feels good.
Prior to building the studio facility we installed a large solar electric system. This system consists of 28 modules each at 335 watts. It is mounted on four 6 inch in diameter steel pipes. The system produces all of the power needed for the studio and for all of the buildings on the 20 acre compound. There are very few recording studios in the US that are 100% solar powered which is something we are proud to have accomplished.
